DENTURES & PARTIALS IN RESTON, VA

Dr. Wayne Myles offers full and partial dentures and additional restorative dental treatments in Reston, VA. Unlike the dentures of yesteryear, which took at least five dental visits and numerous adjustments to make, digital dentures are generally made in just two appointments. By using CAD-CAM technology, a denture can be designed with an incredible fit and appearance.

If you lose or break your denture, a permanent digital record of it is kept so a new one can be made right away. Also, a second denture set can be made at the time of the two appointments, so you’ll never be without your teeth again.

Partial dentures

DENTURES AND THEIR BENEFITS

Full dentures are removable prosthetics that replace either all of the upper or all of the lower teeth. They consist of a gum-colored base that supports an entire row of artificial teeth, which are usually made out of porcelain or acrylic. Dentures are a cost-effective dental treatment that is easy to care for. When secured with dental implants, dentures enable patients to restore the full function of their bite so they may enjoy their favorite foods. Modern dental prosthetics also allow dentures to look and feel just like natural teeth.

A partial denture is similar to a full denture but with one big exception. Rather than replacing an entire row of lost teeth, a partial denture fits in around the remaining natural teeth, filling in the empty spaces throughout a dental arch. The benefits that partial dentures offer are similar to those offered by full dentures.

THE COST OF DENTURES

Dentures tend to cost less than other forms of tooth replacement, such as dental implants. We’ll give you a personalized estimate for the cost of your dentures during your consultation. In many cases, dental insurance is willing to cover a significant portion of their price. Our team will also be happy to help you apply for financing or sign up for our in-house savings plan, which can reduce the cost of your treatment by 15 percent.

THE DENTURE PROCESS

The process for digital dentures may involve as few as two appointments. At the first appointment, we’ll take some impressions of your teeth and record data about your bite. Dr. Myles will send that information to a laboratory and use advanced software to create a digital model for your dentures. Once Dr. Myles approves the denture design, the lab will fabricate your prosthesis. You could have your new smile in as little as one week!

CARING FOR YOUR DENTURE

With proper care, a removable denture can serve you well for 5 – 8 years. Here are a few tips to help your new smile stand the test of time:
  • Clean your dentures and your gums daily
  • Keep your dentures moist when you are not wearing them
  • Remove your dentures when you are standing above the sink or above a soft surface (so they will not break if you drop them)
  • Visit us regularly so we can adjust your dentures if necessary

ARE DENTURES RIGHT FOR ME?

Dentures are an excellent option for patients who have lost a significant number of teeth and who are looking for a cost-effective way to rebuild their smile. However, Dr. Myles may recommend implant-supported tooth replacement instead if your jawbone is in fairly good shape and you want to have new teeth that are as sturdy and long-lasting as possible.

It is recommended that you wear your partial denture for 14-16 hours per day and remove it for the remaining 8-10. It is important that you remove your dentures for at least 8 hours to give your mouth time to rest. Wearing dentures 24 hours a day can cause infection and bacteria to gather and gum irritation.

Dentures have been known to shorten patients’ lifespans. This is not directly due to the dentures but due to how diet may be impacted by wearing and chewing with dentures. It is not uncommon for patients with partial dentures to struggle with chewing. Many healthy foods are difficult to chew, which results in patients avoiding them. This can cause malnutrition in patients, which can shorten their lifespan.

Dentures can change the shape of your face. However, this does not always happen. Dentures are known to lift your face because of the added support and structure they provide for your mouth, jaw, and cheekbones.

DENTURE FAQS

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT WHEN I FIRST GET DENTURES?

Dentures will take some time to get used to. Most patients report that they will feel large and odd when you first insert the appliance. You should expect increased production of saliva while you adjust to wearing them. Additionally, you will need to relearn how you eat and speak while wearing it. It is normal to sound funny when you first speak. We suggest cutting your food into smaller pieces until you have adjusted to chewing food while wearing your new denture.

WHY DO MY DENTURES FEEL LOOSE?

After a few years of wearing dentures, your soft tissues and bones may shrink slightly. This will cause your dentures to fit differently and feel loose. Additionally, if you lose or gain weight, the fit of your denture will change. To correct the issue, you can have your dentures relined. This should make them feel snug again. On the other hand, if this does not correct the fit, then it is time to get new dentures.

WILL I NEED TO USE A DENTURE ADHESIVE?

Denture adhesive is just an additional method to secure a well-fitted denture. It should not be used as a primary way to secure the denture. Some patients believe that if their denture does not fit correctly, they need to begin using denture adhesive. However, if your denture does not fit correctly, it may be time to get a new one made.

HOW OFTEN DO DENTURES NEED TO BE REPLACED?

In general, dentures need to be replaced about every 5 to 10 years. The lifespan of dentures varies based on a variety of factors including patients oral care, diet, and their placement. We recommend scheduling regular dental cleanings and examinations so we can check in on the overall health of your dentures and be ready to replace them whenever needed.

CAN I WEAR DENTURES IF I HAVE GUM DISEASE?

Dentures are typically not recommended for patients with gum disease. This varies on a case by case basis, however in general, patients with gum disease do not have healthy enough gums for dentures to adhere to. If you have gum disease, and are looking to replace missing teeth with dentures, we will treat the gum disease before fitting you for dentures.

CAN I WEAR MY DENTURES AT NIGHT?

It is important to give your gums a rest each day when you wear dentures. The most logical time to do this is when you are sleeping. A full eight hours of rest from wearing the denture will help your gums heal and rest.
