Did you know that September is National Gum Care Month?
Although you really should be taking care of your gums all year long, this
month is a great time to learn how. Doing so can prevent gum disease, a serious
bacterial infection that can cause the gums to recede and your teeth to become
loose and even fall out! In honor of this month, your dentist is sharing 4
quick and simply ways to keep your gums in good
1. Floss Every Day
There’s a reason that flossing is the first item on this
list. Flossing is the number one habit to promote healthy gums and prevent gum
disease, also known as periodontal disease. While brushing is a great way to
clean your mouth, it only reaches three of the five surfaces of your tooth.
When you neglect to floss, tiny particles of food get stuck in between your
teeth. They attract bacteria that can result in inflammation and even infection
in your gums. Make sure to floss every day to keep bits of food from being
caught down by your gumline.
2. Brush Twice a Day
You should be brushing not only the surfaces of your teeth,
but the area where your teeth meet your gums. That’s where plaque loves to
build up and wreak havoc in your mouth. Be sure to brush at least twice a day
(or after every meal and snack if you can) in order to keep your whole mouth
fresh and clean.
3. Examine Your Gums
Checking out the state of your mouth might not be on your
daily routine, but pay attention to your gums every once in a while. Watch out
for any of these symptoms of gum disease:
- Red, inflamed, swollen, or tender gums
- Receding gums that make your teeth appear longer
- Bleeding when brushing or flossing
- Pockets or gaps where gums meet teeth
- Persistent bad taste in your mouth or bad breath
- Sensitive teeth or gums
4. Visit Your Dentist
Don’t just save the dental appointments for when you have a
problem. To keep your teeth and gums in tip-top shape, you’ll need to attend a
checkup at least every six months. At these visits, your dentist can examine
your gums for any sign of periodontal disease. He or she can also provide you
with more advice on how to keep your mouth healthy.
Even after September is over, keep these 4 tips in mind.
