teeth sensitivity

What causes tooth sensitivity?

When patients are dealing with sensitive teeth, it can impact many facets of their lives. Tooth sensitivity can make it uncomfortable to eat and drink your favorite foods and beverages. It can also be painful when breathing in cold air or trying to enjoy acidic foods. In situations such as this, a patient may be diagnosed with tooth sensitivity. In fact, many men and women struggle with sensitive teeth, or “dentin hypersensitivity.”

What causes tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity occurs to the tooth or root when the enamel that covers and protects the teeth becomes thinner or gum tissues recede. This results in sensitivity due to the exposure of the dentin underneath the enamel. Other causes of tooth sensitivity include:

  • Erosion of teeth from GERD, bulimia, or highly acidic foods and beverages
  • Periodontal disease that has caused a recession of the gum tissues
  • Worn tooth enamel from aggressive brushing or brushing
  • Cavities present in one or more teeth

In order to address tooth sensitivity, patients should start with an initial evaluation with the team of Smiles by Myles. We can examine the smile and determine the source of the problem. If a cavity is the root cause, we will often perform a filling on the same day to restore the tooth and protect against future problems. Additionally, patients who have thin or worn enamel, or gum recession, that is contributing to the condition, can speak to our team about toothpastes and other products that can be used to strengthen the enamel and reduce sensitivity discomfort.

Patients with tooth sensitivity should work with their dentist to find the cause as other conditions can cause similar symptoms but require different treatment. These alternative causes include cavities, broken teeth, or even teeth bleaching treatments.
