Over the last three decades, the number of Americans wearing braces has doubled. More kids and teenagers are seeking orthodontic help, but so are more adults – about one third more. Luckily, technology has also evolved along with this rise in demand; metal- and wire-based treatment is not the only option. For patients hoping to fix misaligned teeth without such obvious hardware, Reston cosmetic dentist Wayne Myles offers Invisalign® treatment.
How Does Invisalign® Work?
Like conventional braces, Invisalign® works by gradually shifting your teeth into proper alignment over a given period of time. Instead of having anything attached to your teeth, however, this process utilizes a clear (“invisible”) aligner that fits over your teeth. Because it’s molded to fit your teeth and can be removed, the aligner is similar to a retainer. But instead of simply holding your teeth in place, Invisalign® also does the work of straightening them, all while staying out of the spotlight.
Problems addressed by Invisalign® include overbites, underbites, crossbites, teeth that are spaced too far apart, and teeth crowded too closely together. The common alignment issues once solved almost exclusively by braces may be treated in a much more aesthetically pleasing and comfortable way.
The timetable for Invisalign® is comparable to that of regular braces. Since each patient requires slightly different alignment, an initial consultation will be necessary to determine how long treatment will take. If a patient were normally estimated to wear braces for one year, that estimate would be consistent with the Invisalign®process. To further understand the specific steps involved, please refer to the below timeline.
- Step 1: Talk to us!: There is no better way to see how Invisalign® can help you than to speak with Dr. Myles personally. A preliminary discussion and exam will allow him to lay out your own personal timetable and illustrate what you can expect to gain from treatment. More importantly, you can learn if you are a good candidate for Invisalign®. Teenagers and adults will likely benefit from treatment, for instance, whereas children who still have baby teeth are not yet suitable candidates.
- Step 2: Get your teeth examined: Our examination is quick and painless. If you are ready to begin treatment, we will begin measuring the dimensions of your teeth through pictures, x-rays documents, and physical impressions. With these, a 3-D image of your teeth is created, allowing Invisalign®to create a series of aligners that are customized precisely for your treatment plan. You will even be able to see a simulation image of how your teeth will be aligned at each phase of the process.
- Step 3: Wear the aligner: Every two weeks, you will wear a new aligner to continue the treatment and help your teeth progress in their alignment. You will not need a new checkup each time, as these have been formulated from the original examination. They can be removed for eating, brushing, and flossing, but will otherwise go unnoticed as they discreetly move your teeth into place.
- Step 4: Enjoy straight, beautiful teeth: By the end of your Invisalign® treatment timeline, your friends may not know that you were wearing anything at all – only that your smile seems even nicer than before. The physical process and results are equivalent to braces, but without drawing visible attention.

Having teeth that are straight, even, and properly aligned is a sure way to make a lasting positive impression on others. Yet not everyone is born with a smile that's perfectly straight. Gaps, crowding, and crookedness are all issues that people often have to deal with when it comes to the aesthetics of their smile. There are many different ways that a dentist can help patients achieve a smile that is straight and well aligned.
Let's take a moment right now to look into these matters. You will be able to learn more about all of these options in greater detail when you visit a restorative and cosmetic dentistry center for a full consultation.
Are all options orthodontic treatments?
While it may come as a surprise, not all teeth straightening options are orthodontic treatments. The type and degree of your tooth misalignment will often determine the ideal treatment based on the discretion of your dentist.
In general, the top three treatments for straightening the teeth are:
- Porcelain dental veneers
- Traditional orthodontics
Let's look at these three in a little more detail right now.
Porcelain Dental Veneers
Porcelain veneers are thin shells of dental ceramic that are deigned to fit over the front portions of a person's teeth. These veneers are super thin and are semi-translucent just like natural tooth structure. This means that light passes through them just like real tooth structure, making them look just like actual teeth in both natural light and artificial light.
Ideal Candidates for Porcelain Dental Veneers
The best candidates for porcelain veneers are people with minor issues with crowding, spacing, and tooth alignment that are predominantly cosmetic in nature. These patients should be in otherwise good dental health. Porcelain veneers can also be used to treat cracked teeth, chipped teeth, and stained teeth.
Invisalign is one of the most popular options for teeth straightening at cosmetic dentistry centers across the country. They've been dubbed invisible braces by some because they involve the use of clear plastic aligner trays rather than the metal brackets and wires of traditional braces. These aligner trays can be removed so a patient can eat, drink, and clean their teeth as normal.
Ideal Candidates for Invisalign
The best candidates for Invisalign are people who have teeth that are crooked or misaligned but are in otherwise good dental health. In general, Invisalign is a good option for those who experience mild to moderate malocclusion, so the patient's dentist will need to determine if Invisalign is the best treatment for them.
Traditional Braces and Orthodontic Care
While porcelain dental veneers and Invisalign have been growing in popularity over time, traditional braces and orthodontic care cannot be underestimated, especially when patients have serious issues with malocclusion that involve the dental arch or jaw position.
Ideal Candidates for Traditional Orthodontic Care
The best candidates for braces and traditional orthodontics are people who suffer from malocclusion that affects overall dental health and has an impact on general wellness. This usually means overbites, underbites, crossbites, and other issues that cannot be addressed by porcelain veneers or Invisalign.

Reston cosmetic dentist Wayne Myles has always been committed to providing patients with high-quality dental care, with an emphasis on comfort and a sense of patient empowerment. As part of his belief in continuing education, Dr. Myles has sought training courses in numerous advanced therapies so that his patients can have the best dental health possible.
In October 2012, Dr. Myles furthered his commitment to state-of-the-art patient care by receiving both training and certification in Six Month Smiles. Six Month Smiles is an advanced orthodontic treatment process that he is pleased to offer to patients, merging the aesthetic concerns of cosmetic dentistry with the fundamental concerns of general dental care.
What Is Six Month Smiles?
Six Month Smiles is a cosmetic braces system that is an ideal option for adult patients who suffer from crooked or misaligned teeth. The patient often presents with crooked teeth that had braces as a child and wants a different option. Six Month Smiles uses a system of clear brackets and tooth-colored wires to help improve overall alignment. The entire treatment process lasts four to nine months, though patients generally achieve great smile makeover results in just six months.
How Six Month Smiles Compares to Traditional Adult Braces
Traditional braces are very noticeable given their use of metal brackets and wires. This usually leaves patients feeling self-conscious about their appearance. The Six Month Smiles system is much less noticeable by virtue of the clear brackets and tooth-colored wires. This helps Dr. Myles' patients feel less self-conscious while undergoing their treatment, and this benefit to patients is just one of the reasons he sought out training in this orthodontic system.
Another important consideration is that Six Month Smiles generally requires less time than adult braces, which may need to be worn for up to two years. As noted above, Six Month Smiles yields the same results in only a fraction of that time, allowing Dr. Myles' patients to undergo the most efficient yet effective treatment possible.
What Dr. Myles' Patients Can Expect from Six Month Smiles Treatment
Once Dr. Myles has determined that a patient is a good candidate for Six Month Smiles, an impression is taken, a panoramic x-ray and examination of the teeth. This dental mold is then sent to the Six Month Smiles dental labs. It's there that their technicians, along with Dr. Myles, will custom design the patient's personalized treatment kit.
Patients will return to the practice in two weeks to receive their first Six Month Smiles appointment, which Dr. Myles will place the braces on. Follow-up visits will occur once a month and/or as needed to make any necessary adjustments.
What Six Month Smiles Means for Dr. Myles' Patients
Six Month Smiles means that Dr. Myles and his team have yet another effective tool that can change patients’ lives for the better. Patients have yet another option for getting the smile that they have always wanted, and one that will prove less intrusive in their lives than extensive or traditional orthodontics.
But with the above in mind, patients can also rest assured that Dr. Myles will continue to seek new avenues for enhancing patient care as new treatments, systems, and technologies become available.
