Porcelain Veneers Procedure – Reston, VA
A Simple & Effective Transformation
The dental veneers procedure is simple and incredibly effective. Reston dentist Dr. Wayne Myles can place veneers - thin shells of medical-grade porcelain bonded to the front surfaces of teeth - to transform your smile. Your veneers will be hand-made by a dental ceramicist and customized just for you so they look natural. Beautiful and durable, veneers can conceal several cosmetic dental problems at once, including gaps, chips, stains, misalignments, and inconsistent tooth shape. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Myles to learn how dental veneers can give you a gorgeous smile.
Veneer Placement Steps
The placement of dental veneers is a relatively straightforward process that requires two or three visits after your initial consultation. Typically, the steps include:
Because the placement of dental veneers is so highly customized, the initial consultation is especially important. Dr. Myles will examine your oral health to make sure that you are a good candidate for veneers. If so, he will discuss your aesthetic goals with you, such as your preference for shape, length, width, and color. If you wish to go forward with dental veneers, Dr. Myles will explain the process and make sure you understand all the treatment details.
The next time you return, Dr. Myles will prepare your teeth to receive the veneers. Because a veneer adds a bit of thickness to the tooth, preparation involves removing approximately one-half millimeter of tooth enamel from the surface. This will ensure optimal fit and a strong bond between the tooth and the porcelain. When the preparation is complete, Dr. Myles will take an impression of your teeth to send to his lab. He will then place temporary veneers to protect the underlying dentin while a dental ceramicist crafts the permanent veneers.
In about two weeks, you will return to have the permanent veneers bonded. After removing the temporaries, Dr. Myles will apply an acid gel to the teeth to dissolve some of the minerals on the surface. The purpose is to create a rough surface for the bonding agent that will ensure a more secure bond. Next, he will apply the bonding agent. Finally, the porcelain veneer is affixed to the front of the teeth. Dr. Myles will apply gentle pressure to seat the veneer, and then use a curing light to harden the cement. It only takes a few minutes for the light to cause the chemical reaction that completes the process. If any additional small adjustments are needed, Dr. Myles can make them at this time. Once the veneers have the right fit and feel, you can leave our office with a beautiful new smile.
