Will Getting Porcelain Veneers Make Your Teeth Sensitive?

A study done at the University of Pittsburgh found that an attractive smile makes others think of you as more trustworthy and attractive. But, although this interesting little tidbit is good information, it doesn’t help you if you feel embarrassed or self-conscious about your teeth!

Fortunately, there are excellent options such as dental crowns and porcelain veneers in Reston that can correct any cosmetic flaws in just a couple of visits. But it’s common to have questions about how your teeth will be affected or whether you’ll have sensitivity afterward. Keep reading below to learn how these procedures work and what kind of problems they can fix!

WHAT KIND OF ISSUES CAN BE CORRECTED WITH VENEERS OR CROWNS?

Porcelain veneers are adhered to the front surface of teeth and are wonderful for a variety of cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Chips and cracks
  • Severely stained teeth
  • Minor gaps and crowding
  • Uneven teeth
  • Small or oddly shaped teeth

Veneers are an especially good solution for anyone who has more than one cosmetic concern because they can easily “kill two birds with one stone.”

Dental crowns are often used when a tooth has been badly damaged by a large cavity, fracture or other type of injury. Also called “caps,” they’re placed over an entire tooth to restore its size, shape and strength.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR TEETH WHEN YOU GET PORCELAIN VENEERS OR CROWNS?

Any type of restoration that has to be cemented onto the teeth, including porcelain veneers and dental crowns, typically requires 2 visits:

  • At the first visit, a dentist will reshape your tooth by removing some of the enamel. Reducing the size of your tooth allows room for the crown or veneer to be put on so it looks natural instead of too large or bulky.
  • Porcelain veneers are quite thin and only adhere to the front surface of the teeth, so only a small amount of enamel must be taken off. Crowns are a more “heavy-duty” type of restoration and require a more substantial amount of enamel to be removed.
  • Also, you’ll have a “temporary” put on at the first visit, which protects the tooth and prevents sensitivity. It also gives your smile a nice appearance until your second visit. A temporary will feel comfortable and look natural until you get your permanent restoration.
  • It will take 1-2 weeks for your custom veneer or crown to be made, at which point you’ll return to have the temporary removed and the permanent restoration cemented into place.
